What Is Aromatherapy For Asthma?

Aromatherapy for asthma

is a natural asthma treatment that takes advantage of the healing powers that are in the oils from different plants. Not only do these oils have very nice fragrances (they smell pretty darn good), but they will also help heal and cure the problems that are causing your asthma. If you wouldn't mind seeing less and less of your asthma signs and symptoms, then consider aromatherapy as a treatment option.

Essential Oils

These aromatherapy oils are also referred to as essential oils. These essential oils will have a very positive effect on your entire body through their very pleasant smell as well as being absorbed through the skin. They won't just cover up your asthma symptoms like most prescription medications do. They will actually strengthen and heal your body, eliminating your asthma causes.

Ways to Use Aromatherapy For Asthma

With aromatherapy for asthma, as well as for other ailments, these essential oils can be used in different ways. There are many different ways to take advantage of aromatherapy benefits.
  • They can be used like an air freshener. Use an aromatherapy diffuser.
  • Using a vaporizer with 2 drops of atlas cedarwood and 4 drops of lavender at night will help you sleep.
  • They can be used to make a steam by combining them with hot water and breathing in the steam. For babies or small children, add several drops of lavender oil to a hot bath and hold the child in your arms over the steam.
  • They can be used to make a chest rub. Rubbing these oils on your feet also seems to work very well.
  • Get a regular massage but with highly concentrated aromatherapy oils mixed in with the regular massage oil. This is the most common use of aromatherapy oils. You get the wonderful benefits of touch along with the healing power of the oils at the same time.

Choosing Which Essential Oils To Use

With aromatherapy for asthma you can choose from a lot of different essential oils. Since not everybody likes the same fragrances or smells, you are able to choose the ones most appealing to you. It's like certain medicines we used to take. If they tasted really bad, we were less likely to keep taking them. So choose a fragrance that you enjoy and you will use it more often and get better healing as a result.

The same goes for your asthma causes. Certain oils might work better at healing your causes than others. If a certain oil or product doesn't seem to be working for you, try another one.

Different aromatherapy for asthma oils available and how they can help your asthma are:

  • Peppermint and ginger have decongestive and antihistamine powers and work best when rubbed on your chest.
  • German chamomile seems to stop the release of histamine (histamine causes your airways to close).
  • Some oils such as marjoram, geranium, rose and lavender work to help control your bronchial spasms.
  • Frankincense, rose and marjoram allow your lungs to expand to help with deep breathing.
  • Lemon and oregano oils can strengthen your immune system which decreases your bad reactions to allergens and other things that can lead you to have an asthma attack.
  • You could also try breathing lavender steam during an asthma attack to quickly relax your lung spasms and open your airways. Lavender also helps you to relax mentally during an attack, which allows you to deal with the panic you feel when you can't breathe.
  • Atlas Cedarwood and frankincense are woody comforting oils that help slow down the breathing, giving a sense of peace and openness in the chest.
If your asthma attacks are triggered by smell, make sure you test any aromatherapy for asthma oils you plan on using beforehand. Learn the Power of Aromatherapy is an excellent comprehensive aromatherapy guide that you will truly enjoy.

Some Aromatherapy For Asthma Blends You Can Use

lavender Lavender Chest Rub
  • 8 drops lavender essential oil
  • 2 drops chamimile essential oil
  • 20 drops carrier oil
Combine ingredients. Rub on chest as needed, especially before bedtime. An alternative to the chest rub is an herbal steam that uses these same essential oils. Chest rub, steam and hot lavender bath can be safely used even after the child begins to wheeze. If you have an attack you can use lavender steam. The steam opens airways, while the lavender quickly relaxes lung spasms. This may halt the attack right in its tracks or at least make it less severe.

Asthma Inhalation Rub

  • 6 drops lavender oil
  • 4 drops geranium oil
  • 1 drop marjoram oil
  • 1 drop peppermint or ginger oil
  • 1 ounce vegetable oil
  • Combine the ingredients. Rub on chest as needed, especially before bedtime. To make sure you are not extremely sensitive to the scent, do a sniff test first before using it.
Essential Oils For Asthma Steam
  • 1/4 teaspoon eucalyptus oil
  • 3 cups water
Bring water to a simmer, turn off heat, and add essential oils. Set the pan where you can sit down next to it. Place your face over the steam and drape a towel over the back of your head to form a mini-sauna. Breathe in the steam, coming out for fresh air as needed. Do at least three rounds of steam inhalation several times a day.

Fresh or dried eucalyptus leaves can be added to the water instead of the pure essential oil. You can replace the eucalyptus oil with other essential oils for asthma as listed such as lavender.

Whichever essential oil you use, be sure to keep your eyes closed while steaming. It's okay to use this steam as often as you like.
