An Asthma Attack - What Is It and What Causes It

asthma attack An asthma attack can be a very frightening and dangerous experience. Fortunately, not all of these attacks are life threatening. But they all need to be treated like they are. There is no way of predicting when a so called mild attack will turn into a major life threatening one. Asthma is very unpredictable and doesn't follow any typical patterns.

What is an Asthma Attack?

According to recent asthma statistics in the US, 30,000 people have an asthma attack every day.

Having an asthma attack means that your breathing tubes or airways going to your lungs have become irritated. You can no longer breathe normally because those airways are getting smaller and smaller. If they keep getting smaller, you will get to a point that you can't breathe at all. At this point, you have entered a life threatening situation and need immediate medical care.

Three Things That Happen To Your Airways During an Asthma Attack

When you have an asthma attack, this means that your airways have gotten really upset with you for coming into contact with something that they can't stand. And when they get upset, there are three different things that they cause to happen to your airways all at the same time:
  • Due to getting irritated, the insides of your airways begin to swell up. This means that there is now less room for the air to get through. They are also more sensitive causing you to cough.
  • The muscles surrounding these airways are starting to tighten up. This means that they are trying to squeeze your airways shut. As your airways continue to get squeezed shut, there is less and less room for the air to get through. You will also feel a tightness in your chest while this is happening.
  • Your ticked off airways now let you have the final result of coming into contact with whatever ticked them off in the first place. Gunk (mucus or phlegm) is now being formed inside your shrunken airways. This gunk is now plugging up your airways leaving even less room for the air to get through. When you cough, this gunk will be coming out. This is what is known as an asthma cough.
Sometimes your airways get extremely upset with you and your asthma attack is really bad. Other times they might be only a little upset with you and your attack is not too bad. You just never know what kind of reaction you are going to see. Your attack could happen very fast and before you know it, you won't be able to breathe. Or things could get worse very slowly. There are no special rules that your airways have to follow.

Asthma Signs and Symptoms Are The Result of Your Airways Getting Upset

So you've gotten your airways extremely upset and they are in the process of getting even with you. That process of them getting even with you is called an asthma attack. Here are the things called asthma symptoms that you now have the misfortune to experience:
  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Tightness or pain in the chest
  • Shortness of breath
Check out the asthma signs and symptoms page for details on these and other possible symptoms.

Respitrol can help you and your family in the following ways:

respitrol
  • Promotes easier breathing
  • Relieves wheezing, coughing, tightness in the chest, shortness of breath
  • Strengthens your overall immune system
  • Boosts your energy level for a more active lifestyle
  • You get these results without any side effects

Asthma Triggers

As we mentioned before, there are certain things that your airways simply will not tolerate you coming into contact with. These things are called your asthma triggers and they are what cause you to have an asthma attack. And what makes this interesting is that everyone with asthma might have a different list of these triggers. Check out the asthma triggers page for all the details.

So What Kinds of Asthma Treatment Options are Available?

Asthma is a serious condition that cannot be ignored. You will have to decide on how you are going to treat it. There are basically two different treatment options that you can pursue. Only one of them leads to you actually being cured and never having another asthma attack.
  • Your first option is prescription asthma medications - These make no attempt to cure your asthma. Prescription medications try to control your asthma symptoms. They work so well that you will have to take at least two different medications and keep an emergency inhaler with you at all times for when they don't work. And since they don't try to cure your asthma, you will have to take them for the rest of your life.
  • Your second option and in my humble opinion your absolute best option is a natural asthma treatment. You can get all the details from the above link, but if you actually want to cure your asthma and never have another asthma attack, then this is the option to choose.
