• Theophylline - Some brand names include Uniphyl, Slo-Bid, Theo-Dur, Theo-24. This is another bronchodilator used along with an anti-inflammatory drug to get better treatment results. It might help your nighttime symptoms. You can take this as a pill or liquid or my favorite, inject it into a vein. Take it every day. Oh, and by the way, make sure you get regular blood tests when taking this medication. It is very important to make sure you are getting the correct dose.
• Leukotriene Modifiers - Some brand names include Singulair & Accolate. This is an inhaled asthma medication that works to control your asthma symptoms by controlling the action of certain chemicals in your body.
• Xolair - This is an injectable asthma medication used when nothing else is working.
• Advair Diskus and Symbicort are two medications that contain both a corticosteroid and a bronchodilator in one inhaled medication.

Medication #2 - Quick Relief Asthma Medications

• Short-Acting Beta-2 Agonists (SABAs for short) - Some brand names include Albuterol (AccuNeb, Proventil), Levabuterol (Xopenex), Pirbuterol (Maxair). These medications relax your airway muscles very quickly, within minutes, and usually last about 4 to 6 hours. These medications are not to be used very frequently. Certainly not every day. They are made for emergencies only. If you need to use them more often, get with your doctor right away.
• Atrovent - Another asthma medication that relaxes your airways very quickly.
• Oral Corticosteroids - Some brand names include Prednisone, Methylprednisone, Hydrocortisone. These are the heavy hitters used for severe asthma and acute asthma attacks. When the normal medications can't get the job done, these guys are brought in. Kind of like a nuclear missile. Be aware that these heavy hitters can cause nasty short term side effects and much more serious side effects when taken for any length of time.

The type and quantity of your prescription medications will be determined by how serious your asthma symptoms are. Some of you might have minor asthma symptoms with the occasional asthma attack. Others of you might be in that unlucky group, the one that has asthma symptoms every day of your life with frequent asthma attacks.
