Asthma Symptoms - Why Do We Get Them?

Asthma symptoms are the result of having asthma. You might get these signs and symptoms we are about to discuss every day of your life or you might only get them a couple of times a year. No two people are alike, and every case of asthma is different. Symptoms are pretty much the same for all types of asthma, except for cough variant asthma. How bad and for how long you have these symptoms will be different from everyone else.

Common Asthma Symptoms

Here are the most common asthma symptoms that we get when we have an asthma attack.
  • Coughing - Could be the first sign that your airways have been irritated. This is usually what is called a wet cough. Gunk or phlegm is expelled when you cough.
  • Wheezing - This is a sort of whistling sound mostly when you breathe out. Your airways have become very small from getting irritated and it is very hard to breathe through them now.
  • Shortness of Breath - You have trouble taking a deep breath. This might happen very gradually so you might not notice it at first or it could happen very suddenly. Due to being irritated, your lungs are not functioning like they should so this can be very serious.
  • Tightness in the Chest - Could also be pressure or even pain. This means that the muscles around your airways are getting very tight and trying to squeeze your airways shut. Could be an early warning sign that your body has come into contact with one or more of your dreaded asthma triggers.
  • Neck Muscles Tighten - You may even have trouble talking.
  • Feelings of Anxiety or Even Panic - As your breathing gets more and more difficult and your other symptoms continue to worsen, the situation becomes very scary.
  • Blue Lips or Fingernails - Since your breathing is no longer normal, these are the first signs that your body is not getting enough oxygen. This is a serious condition.

Early Warning Asthma Symptoms

The symptoms listed above are the common symptoms associated with having an asthma attack. But there are other asthma signs and symptoms that could be early warning signs. They could be a signal that you are about to start having the more serious symptoms listed above. Some of these are listed below:
  • You Begin To Have Trouble Sleeping.
  • Exercising Becomes More Difficult.
  • Your Breathing Becomes More Rapid For No Reason.
  • You Can't Concentrate Like Normal.
  • Your Anxiety Level Goes Way Up.
  • Your Energy Level Is Way Down.
  • You Find Yourself Sighing For No Reason.

What Is Asthma?

You can get more information from the what is asthma page, but basically, having asthma means that your airways (how air gets back and forth to your lungs) are extremely sensitive to certain 'things'. If you come in contact with or do any of these 'things', your airways will make your life miserable in the form of asthma symptoms.

Asthma Triggers

These 'things' that irritate your airways are called your asthma triggers. You can check out the full page on asthma triggers, but these are a list of 'things' that are specific to you. Everybody has their own list of triggers that really get their airways ticked off. And when your airways get ticked off, bad things happen to them and you end up with some or the whole list of asthma symptoms.

Irritated Airways

The first thing that happens when you come in contact with one of your asthma triggers is that your very sensitive airways pretty much throw a temper tantrum. The more official name for a temper tantrum would be an asthma attack. So you could say that coming into contact with one of your triggers is really your asthma attack cause. Here are the three major things that happen to your airways when they get irritated:
  • The insides of your airways begin to swell. This cuts down the breathing room inside your airways from say the size of a hose to the size of a straw.
  • The muscles that surround your airways begin to squeeze them together, trying to close them completely. That straw has now been reduced to the size of a very small straw.
  • The insides of your irritated airways now begin to release gunk or what some people call phlegm. Whatever you call it, and I choose to call it gunk, it is now plugging up your very small straw that you are trying to breathe through.

The next step in this sequence would be you having those asthma symptoms that we talked about earlier. This is the way it usually happens with most asthma types except for cough variant asthma. The things that change are how bad your asthma symptoms are and how long they last. Everybody reacts differently to coming in contact with their asthma triggers. Your asthma attack one day could be completely different from the one you had last week.

Asthma Treatment

You have two major choices when choosing how to deal with your asthma signs and symptoms:
  • Stick with prescription asthma medications - they don't cure your asthma and some of the side effects are worse than your asthma symptoms.
  • Choose one of the natural cures for asthma that you will find throughout this website - these natural remedies can not only cure your asthma, but they do it with no dangerous side effects.
