Asthma Triggers - What Are They?

Asthma triggers are what we call those things that really irritate your airways when you have any of the asthma types. When you have asthma, your airways are always one step away from total meltdown. They are very sensitive to a specific list of things. When you come in contact with one of those things on the list, some very nasty things start to happen such as:
  • The insides of your airways begin to swell up because you came in contact with something your airways really didn't want you to. So instead of that nice big tube that you used to breathe through, it is now quite a bit smaller.
  • The muscles that surround your airways begin to tighten up. They are trying to squeeze your airways shut and are having some good success. That nice nice big breathing tube that you started with is now even smaller.
  • The insides of that very small tube now start to fill up with what I call gunk that is being produced by the irritated linings of your airways. Now you are trying to breathe thru a plugged up, very small tube and you are having great difficulty. You are having an asthma attack.

What Kinds Of Things Can Be Asthma Triggers?

There are all kinds of things that can be your asthma triggers. And everybody seems to have a different list. And even if you have the same thing on your list as somebody else, you will both react differently to it. Your airways might react very strongly to a specific item while for someone else, the reaction won't be anywhere near as bad. Here is a list of some of the more common asthma triggers:
  • Certain foods - could be just about anything, even food additives or preservatives.
  • Air pollution - could be outside air or even the air inside your home.
  • Aerosol sprays - cleaning products, cooking products, hair spray, etc.
  • Animal dander - all pets give off dander.
  • Car exhaust fumes
  • Cleaning products - certain chemicals or combinations might be on your list
  • Cockroach droppings - will need to eliminate them from anywhere that you might go.
  • Dust mites - they are in your bedding, carpets, etc.
  • Gas fumes
  • Grass - could be any kind of plants, etc.
  • Mold - you will need to search everywhere to find it and eliminate it.
  • Paint fumes
  • Pollen - any kind of pollen could be a problem.
  • Smoke - cigarettes, fireplaces, etc.

Other Things That Could Be Your Asthma Causes or Triggers

  • Certain types of weather or weather changes
  • Getting emotional
  • Exercising
  • Things like colds, pneumonia, sinusitis
  • Reflux disease(GERD) or heartburn
  • Certain medications

Finding Out Your Asthma Triggers

In the beginning you won't even know what your asthma triggers are. Unfortunately, you can't figure them out until after they cause all those nasty things to happen. So every time you have an asthma attack you need to make note of what you were doing, eating, feeling, etc. and compare it with the list of possible triggers. It might take a while to narrow it down but it is something you really need to do. Avoiding your asthma triggers is the best asthma prevention.

Asthma Symptoms

When you do come in contact with your asthma triggers and your airways get irritated, the next things that happen are called your asthma symptoms. These asthma signs and symptoms are pretty much the same for all types of asthma except cough variant asthma.
  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Tightness, pain or pressure in the chest
You can find out more from the asthma signs and symptoms page, but those four are the basic signs of asthma.
