Asthma Types - What are They?

Extrinsic Asthma Asthma used to be referred to as being in one of the following two asthma types or groups:
  • Extrinsic Asthma - Usually called Allergy Induced Asthma - The vast majority of people with asthma have this type. If your asthma symptoms are triggered by anything that can cause an allergic reaction, you are said to have allergy induced asthma or allergic asthma.
  • Intrinsic Asthma - Usually called Non-Allergic asthma - With his type of asthma your asthma symptoms are not related to or caused by allergies. Children do not usually develope non-allergic asthma. It is most often seen in adults over 40.
Both of these asthma types have the same symptoms. The difference is in what causes those symptoms to show up.

What is Asthma

From the What is Asthma page, we can find out that having asthma means that our lungs and airways are extremely sensitive to certain things. This is true for all types of asthma. These things are called our asthma triggers. Basically, these things or triggers are what really get our airways upset. And when our airways get upset, they throw a temper tantrum, which is called an asthma attack. Sometimes these temper tantrums are short and not too bad, but other times they are off the charts bad.

Asthma Signs and Symptoms

So what happens when our airways have a temper tantrum? We end up having really nasty things happen to us which we call asthma signs and symptoms. Things like coughing, wheezing, tightness in your chest, shortness of breath. These symptoms are common for most types of asthma. It's because when our airways get irritated the following things happen:
  • There is swelling inside the airways.
  • The muscles around the outside of the airways try to squeeze the airways shut.
  • The airways can also get filled with gunk or mucus.
When we are experiencing these nasty things, we say that we are having an asthma attack. Sometimes our asthma attacks are just very annoying and other times they can be so bad, that they become life threatening. An acute asthma attack is the worst type of attack and requires immediate medical attention.

Different Asthma Types

According to recent asthma statistics, there are over 20 million people in the US with a variety of asthma types. When we refer to different types of asthma now, we usually use one of the names from the following list. Click on each name for more detailed information.
