What Is Asthma
What is asthma? Well, according to the
National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, this is what they list as their asthma definition:
Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. Asthma causes recurring periods
of wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.
The coughing often occurs at night or early in the morning.
Normal BreathingIn simple terms, when you take a breath, air travels down these tubes called airways and ends up in your lungs. Your lungs are like a balloon. When you take a breath and fill them with air, they get bigger and when you breathe out they get smaller again .When your body is functioning like it should, you don't even think about breathing, you just do it.But, according to recent asthma statistics, there are over twenty million people in the United States alone who have asthma and 30,000 of these people have an asthma attack every day! If you ask these people what is asthma, they might tell you that they have a whole lot of trouble breathing at certain times and other times they are okay. Breathing When You Have Asthma - What Is Asthma Part 1Here is a simple explanation of asthma, which might help you better understand what is happening to you or a loved one with asthma. If you are a person with asthma, your tubes or airways that carry air into your lungs are very sensitive. There are certain 'things' that your airways just can't stand. In fact, they absolutely hate it when you come into contact with any of these 'things'. And if you disobey the unwritten rule and do come into contact with any of these things, your airways will do their best to make your life miserable for awhile.Asthma Triggers - What Is Asthma Part 2These 'things' that get your airways so irritated are called your asthma triggers. They are called your asthma triggers because everybody seems to have their own list of things that really irritate their airways. Your airways might get freaked out by a certain food while someone else with asthma can eat that food all day long with no problems. The best asthma prevention is to stay away from the things that irritate your airways.Check out the asthma triggers page for details on what kinds of 'things' can be major irritants to your airways. You might have one certain 'thing' on your list or you could have multiple things that your airways absolutely hate. Depending on what 'things' are on your list, your airways could be irritated almost all of the time. You might not be able to remember a day when you didn't have any problems breathing. Irritated Airways - What Is Asthma Part 3So what happens when you cross the line and come into contact with one of the forbidden 'things' or triggers that your airways can't stand? Did I mention that your airways can make your life miserable?
Asthma Signs And Symptoms - What Is Asthma Part 4Not only are you trying to breath through a plugged up small straw instead of a garden hose, but now you have a bunch of other things to deal with. We call them your asthma symptoms and they are really what having asthma is all about. Except for maybe cough variant asthma, other asthma types all have similar asthma symptoms.
