Acute Asthma Attack

asthma attack Having an asthma attack

can be a very frightening experience. But having an acute asthma attack is not only extremely frightening but can also be a life and death situation. You must seek immediate medical attention at the first sign that your breathing problems are worse than normal. Waiting too long could be fatal.

What makes an acute asthma attack worse than your usual attack is that this time your asthma inhaler will not help like it usually does. This should automatically tell you that you need to seek immediate help. Don't hesitate, because this situation could immediately become life threatening.

Additional Asthma Signs and Symptoms

During an acute asthma attack you will not only have your usual asthma signs and symptoms, which will not go away and might even get worse, but you will also get some of these additional symptoms.
  • Your coughing could be non-stop.
  • The tightness in your chest will be very bad.
  • Just walking and you will be out of breath.
  • You won't be able to complete a full sentence without being out of breath.
  • Your lips might turn blue from lack of oxygen getting to your system.
  • Your might feel very confused or agitated.
  • Trying to concentrate is a big problem.
  • You keep trying to find a position that allows you to breath a little easier.
  • You ignore everything around you as you focus on just trying to breath.
  • Your inhaler has little or no effect on your symptoms.
As your symptoms get worse, you might notice a stage that is called 'silent chest' asthma. Do not mistake this stage as a sign of improvement! It is just the opposite! It means that your airways are almost completely blocked and you have entered into a life or death situation. You need immediate medical help!

Take Your Asthma Seriously

Asthma is a very serious condition if left untreated. According to recent asthma statistics, there are about 20 million people in the US who have one asthma type or another. 9 million of these are childhood asthma. 30,000 people have an asthma attack every day and some of these turn into a life threatening acute asthma attack.

What Is Asthma

From the what is asthma page,we find out that having asthma means that your airways or breathing tubes going to your lungs are very sensitive to certain things. It might just be one thing or it could be many different things. Come into contact with or do any of those things and your airways will get very irritated and do things you don't want them to do like:
  • The inside of your airways will begin to swell making less room for air to pass through.
  • The muscles on the outside of your airways will try to squeeze your airways shut making even less room for air to pass through.
  • Gunk (mucus or phlegm) will begin to clog the airways, which of course makes it even harder to breath.
These are the things that lead to you having an asthma attack and sometimes an acute asthma attack. You will now start having the asthma symptoms described below.

What Causes Asthma

Although we don't know what might cause you to have very sensitive airways, we do know what causes you to have all those nasty asthma symptoms. Very simply, coming into contact with those things that irritate your airways are what starts the chain reaction leading to an asthma attack. Those things are called your asthma triggers.

Asthma Triggers

Asthma triggers are those things that really irritate your airways. Everybody has their own list which is probably different from everyone elses. Even if you have the same thing on your list as I do, we will probably both react differently when we come into contact with it. The asthma triggers page has all the details but some of the things that can be triggers are:
  • Certain Foods, Air pollution, Aerosol Sprays, Pets
  • Cockroaches, Dust Mites, Smoke, Mold, Pollens
  • Weather, Different Emotions, Exercise, GERD, Medications
Check out the asthma prevention page for help with avoiding your triggers.

Asthma Signs and Symptoms

Except for an acute asthma attack, the other asthma types have similar symptoms. The one exception is cough variant asthma. Here are the typical symptoms of most types of asthma:
  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Tightness in the Chest
  • Shortness of Breath
See the asthma signs and symptoms page for the complete list and details.
