Cough Variant Asthma - A Unique Form Of Asthma

Cough Variant Asthma is a particular type of asthma that gets its name from its primary and usually only symptom. People with most other asthma types usually have a pretty standard set of asthma symptoms. The difference is usually in what causes everybody's asthma symptoms. No two people seem to have the same list of causes, even for the same type of asthma.

With cough variant asthma, the big difference is that coughing is usually the only obvious symptom. And the cough is a very dry cough, no gunk is being expelled. The cough is also very persistent, meaning that it can last a long time, for many weeks sometimes. It is also usually a loud cough, what we call a barking cough. With no other obvious symptoms like wheezing, this type of asthma often goes undiagnosed. Coltsfoot is one of the asthma herbs that works as a cough suppressant.

What is Asthma

You can get more details from the what is asthma page, but having any type of asthma such as cough variant asthma means that your airways are overly sensitive to specific things that we call your asthma triggers. Coming into contact with any of these things will cause your airways to get really upset. And when the airways of a person with asthma get upset, there is a very predictable list of things that usually happen.
  • There is swelling on the inside of your airways which turns them from the size of a big hose to a straw.
  • The muscles on the outside of your airways try to squeeze the airways shut, making the straw even smaller.
  • The inside of your airways create gunk (plegm is another word) which clogs up the airways even more.

Asthma Signs and Symptoms

Now while all of that is happening on the inside of your body, you start to show the typical results on the outside of your body. We call these results asthma signs and symptoms. And these symptoms are usually pretty standard for most of the asthma types other than cough variant asthma:
  • Coughing - usually it is a wet cough, where gunk from your lungs and airways is being pushed out. Remember, with cough variant asthma, there is no gunk, just a dry cough and none of these other symptoms.
  • Wheezing - a whistling sound, usually when blowing out, from breathing through a very narrow opening.
  • Tightness, pain, or pressure in the chest. The muscles around your airways are trying to squeeze them shut.
  • Shortness of breath - you just can't catch your breath because you are breathing through a very small plugged up straw
There are less frequent symptoms that you can find out about on the asthma symptoms page, but those are the main four.

Asthma Triggers

If you have cough variant asthma, your asthma causes or more specifically, the triggers that cause your chronic cough are similar to the triggers for other types of asthma. You can check out the full page on asthma triggers, but basically, everyone with asthma has a list of things that really put your airways into a bad mood.

If you expose yourself to any of the things on your list, that is when your asthma symptoms show up. In the case of cough variant asthma, that will be your chronic cough. Following is a partial list of possible asthma triggers from the asthma triggers page:

  • Specific foods - could pretty much be anything
  • Different types of air pollution
  • Aerosol sprays - like hair spray or deoderants, etc
  • Pet dander - all pets give off dander
  • Cockroach droppings
  • Dust mites - in your bedding, carpets, etc
  • Allergens - like grass or pollen, etc
  • Mold
  • Smoke
  • Weather - many people get asthma symptoms from changes in the weather
  • etc. etc.
Anything on that list could could be one of your asthma causes or triggers. In fact, you could have many different causes that affect you. You might even have an asthma cause that is not on that list. Everybody is different and the way that something on the list affects you will be different from the way that it affects somebody else.

Some people with asthma have their airways get irritated all the time while others only see the problem every once in awhile.
