Non Allergic Asthma

Non allergic asthma and allergic asthma are the two major classifications of asthma. You can also learn about the different asthma types which are sub-identifiers of the 2 major classifications.

Of the two, more people have allergic than non-allergic asthma.

So what is asthma? Having any type of asthma means that your lungs and airways are very sensitive to certain things. When you come in contact with or do any of these things, bad things start to happen to your airways like:

  • The insides of your airways start to swell. This means that there will be less room in the airways for the air to get through on its way back and forth to the lungs.
  • Your airways have muscles that surround them and those muscles get very tight and start trying to squeeze your airways shut. This results in even less room for your air to get through.
  • The third thing that happens is that the insides of your airways start to release gunk (phlegm or mucus). This gunk begins to plug up your airways, which of course means that there is even less room for air to get through.

Asthma Triggers

There are many different things that can cause your airways to get irritated resulting in you having an asthma attack. This list of things, called your asthma triggers, is broken down into two different types called allergens and non-allergens. This is where we get the names for our two different classifications of asthma:
  • Allergic Asthma - having this type just means that your airways are very sensitive to and get irritated by different allergens. Some different allergens are:

    • Pollen
    • Molds
    • Grass
    • Dust Mites
    • Cockroaches
    • Pet dander
  • Non Allergic Asthma - having this type just means that your airways are very sensitive to and get irritated by different non-allergens. Some different non-allergens are:

    • Excercise
    • Cold Air
    • Dry Air
    • Smoke
    • Stress
    • Viruses
    • Weather Changes

Asthma Signs and Symptoms

So whether you have non allergic asthma or allergic asthma your asthma symptoms will be the same. Here are the most common and typical symptoms:
  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Tightness in the Chest
When you start having these symptoms you are said to be having an asthma attack.

Your Best Asthma Prevention
